Who are we?
The Ethnic Schools Association of Queensland (ESAQ) Inc is a non-profit, community-based, public organisation whose members provide after hours language and cultural education for all students, irrespective of their linguistic background.
ESAQ has members from different language groups, and liaises with the national body and Members of Parliament on behalf of the After Hours Ethnic Schooling Program (AHES). AHES Programs increase the opportunity for students to access language education in addition to existing provisions within the mainstream schooling system of the state. The language offerings of the AHES Program greatly enhance the language offerings of mainstream schools in Queensland. It is located in the Education Queensland LOTE (Languages Other Than English) Centre.
The AHES Program covers all aspects of community languages, with support from a range of sources. Queensland community language schools are called After Hours Ethnic Schooling establishments, or providers. The program provides opportunities for Queensland students to learn more about the language and culture of their community and, in many cases, to improve their chances of getting into the tertiary study of their choice.
Many AHES students are now gaining credit for their Year 12 language studies.
Community Languages Australia acts as an advocate for Ethnic Schools at the national level. It is made up of representatives from all states and works closely with the Australian Federation of Ethnic Schools Australia (AFESA).
ESAQ provides ongoing representation of Ethnic Schools in Queensland, as a part of facilitating the teaching of Community language and culture within the state.
Ethnic language teaching is a cost effective government & community partnership, and the ethnic schools’ multicultural activities assist in developing a network within the ethnic communities, which can enable an interface for closer integration with the wider community.
As Australians, Ethnic Communities have a role to play in the bigger picture
ESAQ provides a vehicle for a structured, diverse, community- based multicultural network within an educational framework . This facilitates a cohesive understanding of diversity towards a united Australia.
