ESAQ
is a non-profit, community-based,
public organisation whose members provide after hours language and cultural
education for all students irrespective
of their linguistic background.
ESAQ
provides an essential service to
the coordination of Community Language and Culture.
Ethnic
schools language teaching is a cost effective government & community
partnership.
After Hours Ethnic Schools contribute significantly to the development of
multiculturalism by providing Queenslanders with the understanding of many
community cultures and languages.
Ethnic schools cultural & multicultural activities develops a network within the ethnic communities that can also provide an interface for closer integration with the mainstream.
As
Australians, Ethnic Communities have a role to play in the bigger picture:
ESAQ
provides that "vehicle" for a structured diverse community based
multicultural network within the Education & Cultural domain. This
facilitates greater understanding of cultures and cohesion of diversity towards
a united Australia.

In Queensland the jurisdiction
authority for Ethnic Schooling is Education Queensland.
It has the role of administering all aspects of
Commonwealth & State government grants to Ethnic Schools. Overall the State
Government’s input is overseen by Multicultural Affairs Queensland.
Education Queensland’s Curriculum Innovation Branch via
the Queensland LOTE Centre provides learning & development support to
After hours Ethnic School teachers.
In addition it provides office space for Ethnic
Schools Association of Queensland.
The LOTE Centre hosts all learning development sessions and is also used by ESAQ and ethnic schools for meetings, workshops and seminars. The LOTE Centre also has the LOTE Library.

At start of
2006 there were a total of 4965 students enrolled in ethnic schools, covering
some 35 languages In Queensland.
